Failure

I am trying hard to be better at planning/shopping/cooking dinners. That is one area that is really difficult for me, for some reason. So last night, I had planned beef stroganoff. Well, actually I had planned it for Thursday, but as soon as I returned from buying Dill weed and several other obscure ingredients I didn't have on hand, I realized that the recipe I was looking at was for a crock pot. So, yesterday morning I prepared the ingredients as carefully read in the recipe, turned on the pot, changed the setting from "high" to "low" when appropriate and anticipated a delicious meal.
These days, I usually feed the kids first at around 6pm, then eat with Jason later at 7:30 or 8. That way we can eat together - usually after the kids are in bed. I gave the dinner to Gavin and he was not eating it as I expected him to. I didn't even try with Ezekiel because I knew he wouldn't eat it. When Gavin was half done with his meal, I asked him if he liked it and he said "no." Hmmm....Then Jason got home and I told him it might taste funny - since Gavin didn't like it. I hadn't tried it yet. Jason tasted it and made a face that confirmed my fears. Gavin said "I told you it tasted weird, Mom." Shoot. Jason said it tasted like sour cream (which he doesn't like) and turns out - I put double the amount of sour cream that you're supposed to. SHOOT! Ruined. Oh well. I ate noodles with butter and Parmesan cheese and Jason wasn't that hungry, so it didn't ruin the night, but I was pretty disappointed in myself. I'll probably pass on that meal for my family next time...

Did you read my blog about my embracing of crock potting?? Tasted like sour cream? Hmmm, I think I'd probably like it! Haha :)

Funny--not for you but as a fellow mom I appreciate the story because my meals are less than expected all the time. I find it hard to cook with the kids distracting me and it's often not that inspiring after preparing 5 meals (counting snacks) a day all the time. Gotta love urban living when you have that "I just need an onion moment"--I love that I can least dart down the street.

I made a HUGE VAT of homemade Mac n' Cheese the other day and when I say huge I mean huge. It was awful. So disgusting. I forced myself to eat as much as I could because I felt so bad throwing all those ingredients away.
A winner of a meal I did make, however was a really easy white wine and parmesan chicken served over that lemon pepper pasta from TJ's. It was so good it was hard to believe I made it.
At least you're trying though, keep trying!

Have you ever considered meal swapping with a friend? Seems like you have some great friends who it would be good to test it out with. :)
